Real Madrid tightened their grip on top spot in LaLiga thanks to an impressive win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu. The White team performed a grerat comeback after the Sevillans scored in the first half. It was initially Benzema who equalized 15 minutes before the break and then it was Vinicius 3 minutes before the end of the game who finally put Madrid in advantage. The final efforts of Sevilla always found a well prepared Thibaut Courtois and never reached the equalizer. Madrid keeps the first place and the distance with the followers is now 4 points.
Carlo Ancelotti gave his thoughts on the game in the press room after the match: "We were up against a very strong side who demonstrated all their quality, especially in the first half. They went ahead early on from a corner and then we found it harder to press high up the pitch, we got a bit unbalanced and allowed them a few chances. After we equalised, we defended better, controlling the game better and we were lucky enough to get the goal. In all honesty, I think a draw was the fairest result and at the same time I think that Real Madrid didn't deserve to lose".
"Vinicius has scored an outstanding goal, that of a player who has something special in his boot and in his physique. Vini Jr. has surprised me with his goalscoring quality. This has surprised me. I knew about his individual quality, I knew how good at dribbling he was, how strong in one on ones, but what is surprising everyone is his ability to score goals that he didn't have in the past. He hasn't had the game that everyone expected, he focused on the game and he scored an outstanding goal, a fantastic goal. An unbelievable strike".
A very important player: "He is demonstrating a quality that he's never shown before. Everyone expected a Vini Jr. that would be amazing one-on-one, he didn't have the chance to show that today, but he was the most important player on the pitch and this is another step towards being one of the best in the world, because sometimes you can't do what you want to do or play the way you know how to do. He focused on being effective in the game and that means that when the opportunity comes you have to take it".
Squad rotation: “We finished the game strongly, but we also have to bear in mind that the players that came on gave us real energy and that was also important in terms of us controlling the game. We play again on Wednesday and may well make some changes”.
Valverde: “We must think about the things we have to do. We’re used to playing every three days. The players who played have to recover properly and those that didn't play have to be ready. We need Valverde because he's a player who brought all of his energy and quality to the side, just as Camavinga did. They're both young players and the team can benefit from that”.
VAR: “I didn't see it. There was contact but I'm not sure. The VAR system is an important tool and I think the fact that it's in place means that the referees make fewer mistakes. I've seen some mistakes in this weekend's games”.
