Real Madrid produced a sublime comeback to defeat PSG on another amazing night of European football at the Santiago Bernabéu. Madridistas saw themselves going down 1-0 at halftime, but returned stronger in the 2nd half making PSG step back with the only option to watch and hope things don’t get worse... but there was no salvation for them: once Madrid got their motors running at full speed, the match saw only one team on the pitch!!
After the clash, Carlo Ancelotti spoke in this press room: “How can it be explained? Well, we had to dig in a lot, but we held on. In the first half it was difficult to win the ball back, we tried to press them and some good pressing by Karim gave us the chance to score the first. Then the magic of this stadium and these fans appeared and that gave us the energy and allowed us to finish off the opposition, because there was only one team on the pitch in the final 30 minutes”.
“Obviously, we’ll all delighted. There aren’t many words to say at this moment, I prefer not to talk after the games. I think we played well tonight. I think the madridistas will be really happy tonight and that’s what’s most important”, the boss added.
Changes: “They were important because they came on at a time to change the pattern of the game. The freshness of Camavinga and Rodrygo really helped the team. It wasn’t just a tactical change, it was to give us more energy in the middle because Camavinga played with so much energy and they didn’t have any left”.
Modrić and Benzema: “Yes, they get better every day. I’m lucky enough to have them playing for this club. Karim got an injury and we struggled, but he’s back now. And Luka is still immense in every game. He’s doing a fantastic job wherever he plays, on the left, sometimes on the right, he’s making extremely valuable contributions”.
Title candidates : “As I said right at the start of the competition, if we’re in good shape, we can compete against any team. After the first leg it looked as though we didn’t have much chance of qualifying because we’d played really poorly and PSG looked good. Things changed because we played much better in this game and showed real character. Luck has a part to play, of course. We were fortunate with the first goal but I think we deserved that bit of luck we had with the opener”.
Could any other team pull of something like this: “It’s the magic of the stadium that has such a fantastic history, of a club that has a fantastic history. It’s a special night, truly spectacular. I have been involved in a lot of games in this competition as a coach and to experience a night like tonight is pretty unique. I hope it becomes an unforgettable night because that would mean we’ve had a good Champions League campaign”.
