Forward Borja Mayoral has left Real Madrid to join Getafe, the LaLiga clubs confirmed on Monday. The 25-year-old Madrid youth product, who scored six goals in 18 appearances on loan at Getafe last season, has agreed a five-year contract and will be presented by his new club on Thursday. Reports from the Spanish press indicate that Getafe will pay €10 million for the striker, which is a decent fee and almost the same amount that Real hoped to get from his move.
After the arrival on the 1st team, series of loan moves followed, first to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga and then to Levante in LaLiga, before an eye-catching two-year spell at Roma in 2020. The Spain youth international impressed in his first season in Serie A, scoring 10 goals, but fell out of favour with the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager. He cut short his time in Rome to join Getafe on loan in January this year and made an instant impact, scoring six times to help them secure survival in LaLiga and an eventual 15th-placed finish under coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
Mayoral was an unused substitute in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Juventus in Los Angeles on Saturday, the final game of their tour of the United States. His departure leaves Madrid with Karim Benzema, Mariano Diaz and youngster Juan Latasa as the only recognised centre forwards in their first team squad.
Real Madrid also confirmed his move with an official statement as follows: “Real Madrid C. F. and Getafe C. F. have reached an agreement over the transfer of the Borja Mayoral. Borja Mayoral arrived at our youth academy in 2007 and has since been a part of Real Madrid, winning 1 Champions League, 1 Club World Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 1 Spanish Super Cup. Our club would like to thank him for his hard work and dedication during his time at Real Madrid. Real Madrid wish him and his family the very best in this new chapter of his life”.
After completing the transfer as the newest player of Getafe, Mayoral said: “Seasons are very long and I think I would have had minutes, but I felt I had to come to Getafe. I’m going to have more prominence and that’s what I’m looking for,” said the 25-year-old striker on his departure from the team merengue at the press conference for his presentation as ‘azulón’.
Mayoral acknowledged that he did see himself as a Real Madrid striker for next season, since he had a contract and was training with them, although he confessed that he had a conversation with Ancelotti about his position at Real Madrid. “My wish is to be stable in Getafe, then we’ll see, I want to go little by little. I’ve been under the pressure of having to do well to return to Madrid and I want to be calm”, he added.
“It hasn’t been easy, the club has made a great effort for me to be here, hopefully it will be a great year collectively and personally. There is not just one reason (to sign for Getafe). I was here for six months, I feel at home. When I finished the season I already had talks to come back here. All roads led to Getafe, it’s been a long time, but I’m happy to be here”, he explained.
“Many positive things come together that I’ve been looking for a long time, Getafe gives me stability. I have a five-year contract and that will help me gain confidence, have security when playing. That stability is going to help me a lot and it’s going to make a better player. I was looking for stability and peace of mind having signed for several years. I wanted to play with more confidence and not with the pressure of what is going to happen next year. The goals will come by themselves,” he predicted about his new stage.
Something about his contribution and playing style: “In addition to his experience in other leagues, I have more work on the field, technical quality, goals, team play. I can prove a lot of things and I am willing to do so. In Levante I already played with two strikers and I do like it. Playing with Enes Ünal helped me a lot, we complement each other very well. Hopefully we can score many goals”.
