A very negative situation is said to have happened after the game vs Villarreal. The situation involved Fede Valverde and Alex Baena and it happened in the cark park of the stadium. Villarreal, who are chasing a Champions League qualification spot in La Liga, secured a memorable and dramatic victory after scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes to beat the defending league and European champions 3-2 in the Spanish capital. The two players had a heated argument that was initiated during the game (with sources claiming even before, during the CdR game between the two teams in January).
There was a small commotion, but the scuffle did escalate. The aggression surprised the Villarreal players, who at that moment were celebrating their victory. Everything went down to a physical confrontation as Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde allegedly punched Villarreal's Alex Baena in the car park of the Santiago Bernabeu right after Saturday night’s La Liga clash. Los Blancos midfielder and Uruguay international Valverde is said to have waited by the Villarreal team bus in the stadium's parking lot after the encounter, before confronting Baena. It is claimed he asked the Villarreal player to repeat what he had said on the pitch before attacking him.
Valverde’s angered reaction stemmed from alleged derogatory remarks from Baena about the Uruguayan’s unborn child – which the Villarreal player denies. The report alleges that Baena had told Valverde in an on-pitch moment during a Copa del Rey clash in January: "cry, because your child won't be born." Valverde's partner Mina Bonino publicly revealed in February that the couple had feared that they would lose their unborn child before further tests showed that the pregnancy was healthy. "Fede never has problems with anyone and this has been for something very serious that comes from before," his agent claimed.
Valverde’s agent also said the confrontation was result of a very sensitive situation regarding family problems and that is something way beyond the lines to be messed with. "In the Copa del Rey match, Baena kicked Fede and told him: 'Cry now that your son is not going to be born'. That stayed there, but today he said something similar and Fede got heated. That's why he waited for him in the car park... and told him that 'he wasn't messing when it came to the family'," the entourage explained to MARCA.
The Villarreal player flatly denied on social networks that he had told Fede Valverde to "cry now that your son is not going to be born", as the Uruguayan's entourage claims and which was the trigger for the Real Madrid player's aggression towards the Villarreal player in the Bernabeu car park. Later, Baena wrote on both his Twitter and Instagram accounts” "It is TOTALLY FALSE THAT I SAID THAT,". Baena also made reference to Valverde's punch although he did not name him at any point: "Very sad for the aggression I suffered after the match and surprised by what is being said about me."
In order to dismantle the theory of Valverde's entourage, Baena retweeted the comment of a user (@elmodelo14) in which he assures that it is totally impossible that the Villarreal player said that phrase to the Uruguayan since the Copa match was played before Mina Bonino, the Real Madrid player's partner, revealed in an interview the problems she had suffered at the beginning of her pregnancy.
However, the story shared by Baena is not entirely true as rumours that Valverde and Bonino were going through a serious family problem emerged on January 15 (five days before the match against Villarreal in the Copa del Rey) with a post by Mina herself after Real Madrid lost the Supercopa de Espana final against Barcelona.
The Argentinean wrote: "This week was one of the hardest we've had to go through, but there you are with your smile trying to cheer us up and giving everything for us. I know you wanted this title to ease our pain a bit, but you don't have to prove anything to us because we will always be there, through thick and thin. Now we have to go through some difficult months, but we will get through this and all the ones to come and everything will remain an anecdote”.
Possible consequences
The attack suffered at the hands of Valverde is probably going to have consequences. The key is to find out what those will be. Several scenarios are being considered and everything depends on the decision made by the club and the player. The referee, of course, did not include anything the match report, but the events took place inside the stadium. The Competition Committee does not usually get involved in these matters, but if there is a complaint from the club or the player affected, a case would be opened and the situation would be investigated.
The second scenario is that Baena takes the case to the police station and initiates criminal proceedings. In that case, this would go above the rest and the incident would become a judicial matter and would avoid an initial sporting sanction. The other scenario is that Villarreal and Baena decide not to file a complaint and leave things as they are. In that case, there would be no sanction and Valverde could play without problems in Real Madrid's upcoming matches.
However, there is the possibility that the National Police, who were present in the Bernabeu, could file a report of what happened and, in that case, anti-violence could come in to investigate the case and, therefore, a very serious sanction could be imposed on the Uruguayan.
