Madrid fans will continue to see Lucas Vasquez with the white shirt at least until 2024! At his beginning at the club he was often seen not as an important part of the team but as the time passed he managed to win the hearts of the fans with his commitment and positivity. After a couple of days since reports first surfaced, Real Madrid have signed Lucas Vazquez to an extension through the 2023-2024 season, meaning the versatile right-sided wide man will remain in the Spanish capital for at least three more seasons. After the ending of this difficult season Lucas Vazquez finally signed the new three-year deal with Real Madrid and the Spaniard is delighted to have the chance to add to his legacy at the club. After penning his new contract, he discussed his achievements so far and everything he hopes to accomplish over these next few years with Los Blancos.
Here is the official statement in Real Madrid’s website: Lucas Vázquez renewed his contract with the club at Real Madrid City alongside Florentino Pérez. The attacker will remain at our club until 30 June 2024. After putting pen to paper, he was presented with a shirt featuring his name and 2024 on the back.
Speaking in the press Lucas said: "This makes me immensely proud, it's really special," he said of his contract renewal in an interview with Real Madrid's official club media. My dream continues on here, which is my home, and something that I feel is very much part of me. You always dream of big things, but it's difficult to then go on and achieve them. I'm really happy to have renewed my contract and to enjoying being a Real Madrid player until 2024. I'm a club player who has grown up with Real Madrid's values and this makes my family and I really happy. It makes me massively proud and it's a big responsibility. Real Madrid have some well-establish values: hard work, respect for others, humility... These things are non-negotiable in life and in football. I've made 240 appearances but am going to fight to ensure that there are many more to come."
Real Madrid, after making some valuations, decided to budge from their hard-line stance. Maybe they were pushed by the interest that many great teams like Bayern Munich, PSG and also Atletico Madrid (which showed strong interest on Lucas earlier this year). But maybe it was also seeing how the team lost the felxibilty as while Vasquez was missing due to the injury. Vazquez’s ability to create chances (only Toni Kroos had more key passes per game) and his non-stop running have made Florentino Perez and anyone else who has been sceptical change their mind. Whatever the case, the fans are joyful to see their “cult hero” running with the white shirt on the pitch and the players are happy to continue having one of the most charismatic and beloved people of the dressing room in their “gang”. As he is 29, the Galician will be a part of the Royal White for the remaining best years of his career.
Lucas Vazquez has come a long way from when he arrived in the club's academy and a long way from when he returned from a loan at Espanyol in 2015. His performances at Real Madrid have been always increasing in quality and quantity ever since. He has been often named to move out of Madrid but with determination, great abilities to adapt in other positions besides his natural one and especially with the loyalty and the amazing relationship with the teammates he has turned into a very important part of the squad. Lucas has been often a crucial part in the journeys that have brought trophies in Madrid.
He continued: "When I joined the club, I couldn't have imagined that I'd go on and reach this tally," he explained. The first day that I set foot in Real Madrid City, I came with my parents and my brother and we saw just how massive it was. Every single corner of the place oozed football. I had a really great opportunity ahead of me to become what I am today. I'm so grateful to Real Madrid for everything."
Over these next few years, Lucas Vazquez might play more at right-back than as a winger, having dropped to the deeper position over 2020/21. On that positional change, he expressed that he doesn't mind where he plays as long as his performances are useful for the team’s needs.
With Vazquez completing his renewal, the attention turns toward club captain Sergio Ramos and whether he will renew with Real Madrid past this season. Sergio Ramos is one of the very few players whose contract is at the end that has not reached an agreement for the renewal. The fans and not only are waiting for more news and they wish to hear a good news not a disappointing one...
