Mariano Diaz is said to have asked to leave Real Madrid this summer, leaving Carlo Ancelotti with somewhat of a conundrum on his hands. After bringing him through the youth team, Los Blancos swindled Lyon into buying him. Then, after Cristiano’s departure, Real got swindled themselves into activating his buy-back clause, hoping to sell the striker on for money or use him as a squad player.

So, The striker returned to Real in 2018 for £23m after a successful year at Lyon but has started just 12 La Liga games over the past four years, with Karim Benzema dominating the minutes and a handful of alternatives often being preferred to Mariano on the bench. With one year left on his contract, Mariano's future is up in the air and Marca state that the 28-year-old has made it clear he wants to leave. His contract expires next summer, and Madrid will demand little compensation, hoping to simply get him off the books.

In those four seasons, Mariano has played a total of 59 games, scoring seven goals. His importance in the team has not been what was expected when he returned for 21 million euros. His constant injuries have not helped him either but, despite rarely getting into the team, he had always preferred to stay at Real Madrid despite having offers.

Real Madrid even sought a move to Rayo Vallecano with a higher salary than he was receiving, but the player preferred to stay at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. One season on and, seeing how little chance he was given by Carlo Ancelotti, he is now actively looking for a way out before the end of his contract that runs out in 2023.

This summer there have been reports that the Turkish side Fenerbahce, which have the money and have often shown the desire to sign veteran players to the wages they want, is seriously interested in the Dominican and Spanish international.

While losing Mariano would not be the biggest blow to Ancelotti, the problem is that he is not the only senior striker looking for a fresh start. Luka Jovic wants to leave after a similarly unimpactful three years at the club - the £52.4m signing has scored three goals in 51 appearances in all competitions - while Borja Mayoral is also set to leave when he returns from his loan with Getafe as he enters the final year of his own contract.

Should all three leave, Real would have no senior backup for Benzema, who will turn 35 in December. Besides all, Real will have to find one with an EU passport, having already used up their non-EU squad spots on Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Eder Militao.

However, a controversial report comes from Sport states the opposite. Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz is reportedly set to remain at the club despite his lack of game time. The 28-year-old is among the players who have been placed on the transfer list this summer but could be set to see out the final year of his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The report by Sport (as quoted by El Nacional) states that the former Lyon man does not have any offers unlike the other players the Spanish champions are willing to sell. Diaz is currently on a deal worth €4 million per season and could see out his contract without regular playing time unless a suitable offer comes this summer, so that may make him stay until the end of the contract.
