At the end of June, Madridistas got two great updates regarding their favorite players. Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos and Luka Modric extended the deal with Real Madrid. Real Madrid continues to prioritise building a competitive squad, ensuring the retention of the key talents while also making strategic signings while keeping a proper squad depth, which is crucial to cope with a long season with high energy demand.
Toni Kroos has often been vocal about his wish to remain as fit as possible and to consider remaining in football not for many years. After evaluating his physical form he decided that another year in high levels would be possible. Meanwhile, 90min reported in May that Modric had decided to remain at the Bernabeu. That choice was made despite competition for places from the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and the other upcoming players. The same went for Dani Ceballos. The Spaniard’s contract was about to expire on June 30, but both he and the club were keen on continuing together.
Kroos did have other options with big money offers from both North America and the Middle East on the table, but he is staying put in Spain. The former Germany international made 30 LaLiga appearances for Madrid last season, scoring two goals, as well as playing 12 times in the Champions League, 10 of them starts. Kroos will face added competition in the Real Madrid midfield as the department has a lot of players in it, but will surely be a key figure on “educating” the youngsters (partnering with Luka Modric), as they try to gain more confidence and maturity.
Ceballos has been in and out of the first team in the first half of the recently concluded campaign. However, he came into his own since the turn of the year, putting in one impressive performance after the other. His efforts convinced the La Liga giants to push for a renewal, despite the arrival of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund. Ceballos has now committed his future at the Santiago Bernabeu till the summer of 2027.
The Croatian veteran is set to surpass 500 appearances for Los Blancos in the early stages of next season, having played 488 times so far, and has won 23 trophies with the club including five Champions Leagues. Modric joins long-time midfield partner Toni Kroos in pledging his future to Real following confirmation of the German’s new contract announcement earlier this month.
Despite turning 37 in the early weeks of the season, Modric remained important to Real during the 2022/23 campaign. Although the midfielder started fewer La Liga games than in previous years, he still made 52 appearances across all competitions. Modric will be 38 shortly after 2023/24 gets going and closing in on his 39th birthday by the time his new deal comes to an end next year. Real Madrid also made the official statements about them, as follows.
