Kylian Mbappe has been heavily linked with Real Madrid throughout his career, but especially over the past year. In the end, though, he decided to stay with Paris Saint-Germain and the forward has opened up about that decision. However, the Frenchman has refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid in future, admitting the club feels like house.
When asked whether a move to Real still appealed to him, Mbappe left the door open to a possible transfer in future and revealed the impact Los Blancos have had on him personally. He said: "You never know what's going to happen. You've never been there [Real Madrid], but it seems like it's like your house, or something like this", Mbappe said when discussing his future with the New York Times, before recognising the constant lure of Real Madrid.
The importance of Macron in Mbappe's decision: The player has already admitted that French president Emmanuel Macron played a big role in his decision to stay in France. At the time, it was explained that a phone call from Macron was key to convincing Mbappe and the player has now discussed this some more. In the interview with the New York Times, Kylian Mbappé revealed details about the conversation with Macron went and how it influenced his decision.
"I never imagined I was going to talk with the president about my future, about my future in my career, so it's something crazy, really something crazy," he said of the call he received from the politician. He told me 'I want you to stay, I don't want you to leave now as you are so important for the country'. He said 'You have time to leave, you can stay a little bit more'. Of course, when the president says that to you, that counts".
Mbappe's decision to re-sign with PSG sparked a lengthy legal battle between La Liga and Ligue 1, with the Spanish setup believing Financial Fair Play rules must have been broken to hand the striker such a huge contract. Accusations that he only stayed with PSG for the money have been rife, but Mbappe rubbished those by insisting: "Everywhere I go, I'm going to get money. I'm this type of player everywhere I go".
Since agreeing to stay, there have been many reports which have exaggerated the amount of power and influence Mbappe has at PSG. The New York Times profile states that he is "annoyed" by these accusations. He said: "That's not my job and I don't want to do this because I'm not good at it," he said. I'm good on the pitch and outside the pitch. Sporting decisions are not my role. There are so many people that are better than me".
