The contract of Sergio Ramos is very close to the end and when only two weeks are left until he becomes a free agent, there comes an urgent need to find a deal and continue this relationship. The continuation of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid is not something of little importance even why the centre back may not be on the top form anymore since he is 35 years old. Fans want him at Real Madrid and he also wants to keep hearing them saying his name. Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos cannot be seen separated!
Reports from Spain suggest that Ramos has changed his mind and is now willing to accept a single-year extension, with Diario AS reporting that Los Blancos will offer Ramos that very same deal after the center-back rejected Madrid’s last offer. Real Madrid seem to have leverage, given that Ramos might not have quality offers to leave the club. However, Los Blancos are also in a somewhat tricky situation, given that Raphael Varane could also leave the club this summer, leaving the team in a tough spot if Ramos doesn’t extend his contract.
Real Madrid seem now ‘open’ to make a new contract offer to Sergio Ramos ahead of his possible departure. Ramos and Real Madrid have tried to negotiate a new deal over recent months, but they have failed to come to an agreement. The defender has not been impressed by the offering of a reduced salary and a short-term deal, even at the age of 35.
All things considered, it now seems that Ramos and Madrid will reach an agreement. The defender wanted a two-year extension and that’s something the club wasn’t willing to give him after spending the last half of the season out with injuries. Now, if Ramos can accept a single-year deal, it’s likely that the two sides reach an understanding which would keep the captain and club legend with the team at least for one more season.
It has been reported that Ramos will consider such terms after all as he looks to recover from injury issues. Ramos missed 35 games across all competitions through injury this season, and that saw him miss out on Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for Euro 2020. But he is looking to put that behind him and return to Real Madrid for next season, already meeting with club president Florentino Perez. Ramos and Perez met late last week in the club’s Valdebebas base, and after the meeting, it has been reported by Diario AS that Real Madrid are ‘open to returning with another offer’ despite seeing proposals turned down already. It’s reported that the ‘importance of Ramos in the squad over recent years’ is a key reason behind the decision.
Though, it is also mentioned that Raphael Varane’s situation could be a factor. The France international is out of contract next summer, and if he does not sign a new deal before the end of this summer, he could well be sold to avoid him leaving for free in 2022. Los Blancos have signed David Alaba to strengthen their defence this summer, and they do have Nacho Fernandez and Eder Militao, who both impressed this season. But however, losing Ramos and Varane will be seen as too big a loss for one summer, and that could play a big part in the former being offered a new deal once again, while Varane is also said to have been offered new terms.
Sergio’s relationship with Real Madrid cannot be easily broken. His influence and the respect and love that teammates have towards him is extraordinary. Here is for example what Toni Kroos said about him not long ago. Toni has stated that Sergio Ramos is the best captain that he has had throughout his entire career. The pair have enjoyed incredible success during the seven years they have spent together at Real Madrid and, with Ramos' contract coming to its end, Kroos hopes to continue playing with him.
"I believe that we don't have to speak about the importance of Sergio [Ramos] for Real Madrid," he said in a press conference with the German national team. I don't know how things are going with the club. I believe that he has 20 days of his contract left. I can only say that I have enjoyed these eight years a lot and I hope to have many more years with him. He has always been a great teammate and a great captain, he has been the best captain that I have had in my career," he said.
Roberto Carlos, who has a senior role at Real Madrid, also spoke about the situation a couple of days ago expressing his positive thoughts stating that Florentino Perez will once again sit down with Sergio Ramos to discuss extending the captain's contract. He said: "He [Ramos] is currently recovering from an injury. I am very sure that there will be a conversation between Sergio and the president to reach an agreement. Sergio is the face of the club, a great player and we'll see what happens".
