With their tour of the United States having come to an end, the team has started the training sessions at the beginning of the week at Real Madrid City as they turn their attentions to the European Super Cup, where they will face Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. The tea, led by the Boss Ancelotti and the technical team of coaches, have officially approached the new season’s atmosphere with a lot of work going on: athletic preparation, gym sessions, technical and tactical training on the pitch and more.
Super Cup Preview
Real Madrid will get the season underway on Wednesday 10 August (9pm CEST) with the first official match. The European Super Cup is up for grabs in the game played at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki (Finland). Our team take their place in the match as reigning Champions League winners, while opponents Eintracht Frankfurt play as Europa League winners.
Ancelotti's team go into the match on 10 August after three friendlies in the United States. The German side will have already played their first German Cup and Bundesliga matches by then. As well as the European Super Cup, our team also plays the first LaLiga matchday that week, on Sunday 14 August away to Almeria (10pm CEST).
The only time these two sides have met in an official match was also in a final. The 1960 European Cup final, which went down as one of the best matches in the history of football, as Real Madrid won 7-3 to claim the fifth consecutive European Cup, thanks to 4 goals from Puskas and 3 from Di Stéfano.
Real Madrid's record in this competition sees the club attempting to win their fifth European Super Cup. The first Super Cup victory came in 2002, with a 3-1 win over Feyenoord in Monaco. The next one came in 2014, with Ancelotti in charge, beating Sevilla in Cardiff (2-0). The Andalusian side were also the opposition in 2016, with a 3-2 extra-time win for the Whites at the Trondheim stadium. The last Super Cup win came in Skopje, thanks to a 2-1 win over Manchester United in the 2017 final.
A look at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium
Helsinki's Olympic Stadium is located in the Töölö district about 2.3 kilometres from the centre of the Finnish capital Helsinki, is the largest stadium in the country, nowadays mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. Inaugurated in 1938, the European Super Cup 2022 venue was renovated between 2016 and 2020 and currently has a capacity of 36,200, playing host to the Finland national team's home games. The Finnish stadium will host the final of a UEFA club competition for the first time ever.
The Helsinki Olympic Stadium has a lookout tower measuring 72.71 metres, the distance thrown by their gold-medal-winning javelin star Matti Järvinen at the 1932 Olympics. The stadium hosted the Olympic Games in 1952 and has also been the venue for various world championships in ice hockey and athletics.
The referee
Michael Oliver is set to take charge of the European Super Cup clash which sees Real Madrid take on Eintracht Frankfurt at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium (10 August, 9:00pm CEST). It's the second time the English official will oversee a game involving our team in European competition. The last time came when Real Madrid met Juventus in the second leg of the 2017/18 Champions League quarter-finals.
