After the victory against Liverpool in the final in Paris, Carlo Ancelotti has become the first ever manager to lift four European Cups. The Italian has enhanced his legendary status in the competition after surpassing Bob Paisley and Zinedine Zidane, who both won it on three occasions.
A two-time winner with Milan as a cultured midfield general, Ancelotti seamlessly made the transition to coaching becoming even more successful. He led the Rossoneri to victory in 2003 and 2007, and it took the 2005 Miracle of Istanbul to deny him another. An extra time triumph over Atlético de Madrid in 2014 took him to three titles, and in 2022 he became the first coach to lead sides in five finals, and the first coach to record four wins.
Ancelotti, thus is the only coach to have reached five European Cup finals, has lifted the trophy twice at Real Madrid. The first was in his previous spell at the club, when he secured the Décima in the Lisbon final in 2014. This was another memorable moment for Real Madrid with Ramos' 93rd-minute goal against Atlético and the subsequent extra-time victory courtesy of goals from Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo (4-1).
First European Cups: His other two Champions League successes came at the helm of Milan. The first time he wrote his name into the competition’s history books came in 2003, with a penalty shootout win over Juventus at Old Trafford, before he clinched a second European Cup in 2007, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final in Athens to somehow take revenge for that surprinsing comeback of 2005 that his team suffered vs Liverpool.
Madridista managers: In the club’s history, Ancelotti joins the select few madridista coaches to have lifted the European Cup on multiple occasions (2014 and 2022). The Italian sits alongside Zidane (3), Villalonga (2), Carniglia (2), Miguel Muñoz (2) and Del Bosque (2). Heynckes, who led the team to the Séptima, is the other coach who has got his hands on the European Cup with our club.
