Marcelo and David Alaba have scooped prizes at GQ Magazine's 2021 awards ceremony, which took place at the Hotel Palace in Madrid. The Real Madrid captain received the Sporting Career Award, while the Austrian was named Athlete of the Year.
After a year without being able to celebrate it as it should, the Palace hotel in Madrid hosted the GQ Awards for 2021 with the sponsorship of Samsung. This edition has been the reunion but also the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of these emblematic awards that during their trajectory have recognized the work of men and women from different spheres of fashion, cinema, sports or music.
Daniel Borrás, editorial manager of GQ in Spain, acted as host together with Will Welch, Global Editorial Director of GQ, who traveled to Madrid for the occasion. Quim Gutiérrez served as master of ceremonies, presenting the awards ceremony and giving way to each of them.
Among the award-winning international artists were Freddie Hughmore , who received the GQ Award for Best International Actor; and Ed Sheeran who collected the GQ Award for Music Icon. The work of several athletes was also recognized: Marcelo Vieira , for his sporting career, David Alaba , for Best Athlete; Saúl Craviotto for the Olympic Merit and Teresa Perales for the Paralympic Merit. Arón Piper, Pedro Alonso, Maxi Iglesias and the model Malick Bodian were other winners. Milena Smit was recognized as the GQ Woman of the Year Award and Dabiz Muñoz received the Gamechanger of the Year Award from Will Welch.
In his sixteenth season with the Galactic club, Marcelo sits second on the list of all-time Real Madrid appearances for a foreign player (532), having won 4 Champions Leagues, 4 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 5 LaLiga titles, 2 Copas del Rey and 4 Spanish Super Cups. He also won a Silver Medal at the Olympic Games in London and Bronze in Beijing, while he has been named in the FIFA FIFpro World XI on six occasions.
Upon arriving at the event, the Brazilian said: "Ever since I was very young I dreamed of setting an example. I am really enjoying everything I've achieved. What I'm doing in the world of sport has been a beautiful journey, I'm very honoured. In my first games, I began to feel like an athlete and I felt happy". Alaba was unable to attend the gala as he was away playing for the Austrian national team.
