Real Madrid academy left-back Miguel Gutierrez has completed a permanent move to Girona. The highly rated full back broke into the Los Blancos first team at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign but he made just three La Liga appearances last season. His lack of game time opened up speculation over a move away from the Spanish capital for the Madrid native with Girona finally completing a move for the 21-year-old.
Real Madrid also officially announced the transfer of Gutierrez to Girona, with the Catalans acquiring 50% of the player’s rights until the year 2027. Gutierrez was actually expected to be a relevant player for Real Madrid two years ago, when he made his debut for the first team. However, Los Blancos have decided to sell 50% of his rights now, meaning that the player wasn’t on Ancelotti’s plans. Madrid will be able to bring him back if he performs at a high level with Girona, who will play in La Liga’s Primera Division after achieving promotion last season.
His journey before the debut vs Cadiz with the first team: Gutierrez started playing football in the lower categories of ADYC Pinto, his hometown. Later he did it at Getafe and in 2011 he joined Real Madrid's base football team. At "La Fàbrica" blanca he went through the ranks until he arrived at the subsidiary in 2020; Castilla. In the pre-season of 2019, his great quality led to Zinedine Zidane calling him up to alternate training with the first team and the reserve team.
The official statement in Real Madrid’s page wrote: “Real Madrid C. F. have reached an agreement with Girona F. C. for the transfer of the player Miguel Gutiérrez. Miguel Gutiérrez arrived at our youth academy in 2011 and has been part of Real Madrid ever since. Our club would like to thank him for his hard work, commitment and dedication throughout his time at Real Madrid, and wish him and his family the very best in this new chapter of his life”.
Gutierrez was a part of the Spain team that won the Under-19 European Championship in 2019, and also won the UEFA Youth League with Madrid under the guidance of legendary striker Raul in 2019-20. He becomes the sixth signing for Girona in this transfer window, with other arrivals including last season's Major League Soccer top goalscorer Valentin Castellanos on loan from New York City FC.
Miguel Gutiérrez was one of the most sought-after players to have come through Madrid’s academy, but he won’t be the only one to leave. Sergio Arribas is still on the market and so is Antonio Blanco, with both youngsters even missing in the US tour. Blanco’s opportunities with the first team have dwindled with the arrival of Tchouaméni, and he too could soon be on his way out of Valdebebas.
