Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has defended the proposed European Super League format which outraged fans across Europe when it was first suggested in 2021. The German star stressed that it is something that should have been in place a long time ago but he does not think it will happen whilst he is still a player.
Kroos was talking during a podcast from OMR and he had clear praise for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez: "I'm very close to him, he's a good-hearted person. From the first day he gave me the feeling that he was happy that I was coming to his club, which is unusual for the size of a club like Real Madrid", Kroos said.
He also appeared very happy that Perez has not tried to sell him during his eight years with the club: "I know that in these eight years he has not thought for a second about selling me. At that time I came for 'only' 25 million Euro, surely he could have sold me later for more money", Kroos said. I have an excellent relationship with the club, I have grown very fond of it. The president, the team, the fans... so I won't leave either".
He then talked about the Super League and Perez's role in making it come into existence: "Never contradict your own president”, he joked. “It's obvious that the idea existed and still exists. It should have been in place a long time ago, I think it will take a while to implement it and I probably won't see it as an active player. My view on it is that I still believe it will come, but I can't say when”, Kroos said.
Just weeks after former Real Madrid teammate Casemiro joined the Premier League club Manchester United, midfielder Toni Kroos took a sly dig at the Premier League and the players who move to England with only the high salaries on their minds. Casemiro joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid for a deal worth up to £70m last month, but the German’s words were not really related to him since the Brazilian’s decision was mostly driven by the desire to find a new challenge.
He also played down the supposed superiority of the Premier League by saying: "The Premier League clubs haven't won an international title this year. The TV money has been significantly higher in England for years and yet it hasn't resulted in English teams winning everything. Thank God, not all players are looking only at the salary, but also at winning a lot of titles and growing more”.
