Raphael Varane seems further and further from Real Madrid as the days pass. This transfer windows is surely getting tough for Real Madrid and Ancelotti should take in consideration the absences of some stars in his calculations because right now there are many uncertain things surrounding him. Varane has been one of the most important players of Real Madrid since his arrival 10 years ago. He got promoted by Jose Mourinho and since then has never slipped from his high status.
However, the Varane case is heating up. Now that Manchester United have completed the signing of striker Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, the English club have made no secret of the fact that Varane is their next big target and have made this clear to the local press. They have also stated that, due to the large sum of money they have had to pay for Sancho, they cannot afford to pay more than 45 million euros for the French centre-back, a figure far short of the 70 million that Real Madrid are looking to recoup.
United made initial contact with the defender a few months ago to find out if he was willing to make the move, and he was. Now, it is time to begin negotiations with Madrid in which, according to AS sources, they will lay the name of Pogba - who also has a contract expiring in 2022 - on the table. The midfielder has reminded the world of his talents at Euro 2020 after flattering to deceive for so long in England.
The negotiation between United and Real Madrid promises to be long and there could still be some surprises. AS has learned that the World Cup winning defender has still not ruled out staying at Real Madrid. All possibilities are still available to him. A call from Ancelotti telling him to stay because of the importance he has in the team could be enough for him to reconsider the situation, as long as Madrid can also make a small effort in his direction financially.
Manchester United have been open about their objective to strengthen their defence by signing two centre-backs. Varane is the number one target, as he is a player very much to Solskjaer's liking, but Villarreal's Pau Torres is also on their list. One way or another, after the Sancho splurge, United need to create finances from the sales of their current squad members and three names on the transfer list are Diogo Dalot, Jesse Lingard and Eric Bailly.
United had a reported transfer spending budget of more than 150 million euros for this summer. Almost 100 million euros have gone on the England winger and, as well as two centre-backs, Solskjaer also wants a defensive midfielder, with Camavinga's name having been mentioned. It is possible that those money will not be enough to steal Varane from Real Madrid but since he is the number one target, the others may be sacrificed just to get the Frenchman.
Real Madrid are open to selling Varane as long as the offer that comes in for him is high enough, given the danger that he could leave for free in the summer of 2022. But the truth is that United’s 45 million plus add-ons isn’t likely to be accepted. Varane himself, anticipating the Red Devils bid, did not want to accept the renewal terms offered by Madrid a few months ago.
If, once all this plays out, the Frenchman does make the move to Old Trafford, Los Blancos will have to be quick in shoring up their own defence with the need to sign another first team centre back. Currently the squad Includes new arrival David Alaba (on a free deal from Bayern Munich), Nacho, Militao and Vallejo. Ancelotti will probably have to call someone in the upcoming weeks!
The defender has reportedly 'given his word' to Manchester United that he wants to sign for them this summer. He looks set to leave Real after entering the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu. The fact that he has done everything in Madrid and has won all of the trophies may be the main reason for him wanting to change area. Maybe it is the right time to start a new adventure and a new challenge. Since Varane has turned down Real's offers of a new contract,Los Blancos do not want to risk losing him for free next summer.
On the other hand, Florentino Perez seems to be plotting a revenge mission over Manchester United’s dirty transfer ‘tricks’ that were done to Real Madrid in the past. The relationship between the clubs in the 2000s was strong, with Ruud van Nistelrooy, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo all securing moves to Madrid. However, similar transfers for David de Gea and Paul Pogba did not materialise in the 2010s; the former was set for a move, only for late paperwork to deny him. Perez now wants to get revenge on United by doing all he can to scupper their hopes of signing Varane.
According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, however, the controversial chief Florentino Perez has already generated his ideas to affect United’s desires. The 74-year-old wants to make it as hard as possible for United to seal Varane’s transfer, including by pushing his transfer fee up. While earlier reports claimed that Madrid value him at €55million, Perez will now demand at least €65million. Furthermore, Madrid officials will make negotiations ‘difficult’ in an attempt to deter United. Such an approach has worked before, with agent Mino Raiola proving an obstacle in the Red Devils’ hunt for Erling Haaland.
Fabrizio Romano, the well known journalist has also spoken several times about this possible transfer and in his latest Tweet he has included the fact that this transfer will have some obstacles when it comes to the agreement between the clubs! He wrote: Manchester United are in contact with Real Madrid for Varane. No official bid yet - won’t be a “quick” deal. Personal terms won’t be an issue - Real still hope to convince Varane to stay, but he wants to try something new. He’s on top of #MUFC list as CB since months.
