Varane’s injury on Saturday night turned out to be more worrying than it was expected. Real Madrid made an official statement as follows: “Following the tests carried out today on our player Raphaël Varane by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the right abductor muscle. His recovery will be monitored”.

This means that Real Madrid will have another multi-game injury & multi-injury game to worry about. Their hope was to get a few key players back for the upcoming Champions League second leg fixture at Chelsea and that should still be the case. But however, they now have a new absence to juggle, as Raphael Varane suffered an injury this weekend against Osasuna.

Los Blancos had to take Varane off the pitch to start the second half, bringing on Nacho Fernandez to substitute him playing alongside Eder Militao. There were rumblings of an injury, and those have now been officially confirmed by the club. Varane has a right abductor muscle injury. According to a report from Manu de Juan of AS, Raphael Varane will miss more than just the upcoming match against Chelsea, who are actually one of his potential suitors this summer if the center back decides not to re-sign with Real Madrid.

Raphael Varane could also be out against Sevilla and Granada. Varane will reportedly also miss the huge weekend fixture against Sevilla, which is crucial in the title race. Sevilla are very much in striking distance of the top spot and they have real chances on gettting very close to the lead since the other match will see Atletico and Barcelona in front of each other. A victory over Real Madrid and a draw or a victory of Barca on the other side would put Sevilla just 1 point away from the 1st place. That means Sevilla will give their best against Real Madrid. Thereafter, Los Blancos face Granada at mid-week next week, and they are also a danger. Granada are looking to qualify for the Europa League in back-to-back seasons and just a few days ago they beat Barcelona in Camp Nou! Both of these matches will be a difficult test for Zidane’s boys and not having the complete team available will be a real pain.

Goal.com’s Mario Cortegana also confirms that Varane will miss roughly 10 days. He is surely out of the Chelsea and Sevilla contests and Madridistas should not expect him to be ready for next week’s encounter with Granada. But if he is needed in the XI, Varane could be back in the lineup for Real’s dangerous trip to San Mames on Sunday, May 16.

Varane’s injury is another tough blow to Real Madrid. There are 5 players missing in the defensive line: Carvajal, Mendy, Vasquez, Varane and probably Marcelo too! However, there are still some players to overcome this tough period full of injuries. Sergio may not be on his best form, but Militao and Nacho have proven to be very reliable and have made great appearances especially in the last few games. In fact, Militao scored the go-ahead goal and was the clear Man of the Match in Real’s 2-0 win over Osasuna this weekend. Even why they are having a great moment, playing several matches with no much time for a proper rest may turn out a problem since tiredness can lead the players to be more injury prone, so they should be very careful.

The most probable scenario is a defensive line consisted of Ramos and Militao as centre backs, Nacho as left back and finally Valverde or Odriozola as a right back. Valverde has shown that he can be reliable as a right back and Valverde has been getting more confidence lately, but it’s up to Zidane to decide. Everything will be clear tomorrow.
