Lucas Vázquez spoke to the press in the media room in the build-up to the Champions League Matchday 4 group-stage encounter against Shakhtar Donetsk (9pm) and previewed the game in the following terms: “It's a very significant step for us. If we manage to win tomorrow, we’ll have virtually assured our qualification. That's no mean feat, but we're doing very well and are very pleased with how the season has gone so far.”

He continued: “We just focus on ourselves. We know that if we win tomorrow, we’ll have qualified and that's all we're worried about. It's a major achievement to have secured our qualification with two matchdays remaining.”

Do you see yourself as being a a right-back: “Yes, at this moment in time, I consider myself to be a right-back. It's a position that I've adapted to really well and I feel really comfortable there in every match and training session. I'm enjoying playing my football in that position.”

On his recovery: “In terms of the injury I'm feeling fine, I've recovered and am feeling strong.”

El Clásico: “It's inevitable that people talk about it. We’ve all got one eye on what's a very important game in the shape of El Clásico, but we're focusing on tomorrow's match because it would be a very significant step in terms of progressing to the next stage of the Champions League.”

War in Ukraine: “It would be very tough for us to experience what they're going through. It just makes everything so much tougher. We want everything to finish as soon as possible and in the best possible way.”

Not considered to be favourites: "We're not bothered about that. It only serves to motivate us all the more. We weren't seen as favourites last season and ended up winning the Champions League. What we can control is how well we do things and to try and win it. That's what we do every year.”

Champions League success: “We believe that winning the Champions League isn't down to luck or chance. The Champions League gets tougher by the season and we’re proud and very happy to have won it so many times in recent years. We're not really bothered about what people on the outside think”.

Memories of game at Legia Stadium six years ago: “Be played behind closed doors and the match ended 3-3. I recalled that Bale scored an amazing volley.
